Hospital director altered neonatal death review to conceal Lucy Letby murders
An inquiry found that Ian Harvey, the former medical director of the Countess of Chester Hospital, changed a review of infant deaths to hide evidence that Lucy Letby had murdered two babies.
Lady Justice Thirlwall's 822-page report criticised the conduct of Ian Harvey and other senior leaders at the Countess of Chester Hospital for failing to protect newborns. Harvey altered Dr Jane Hawdon's review of 17 cases, removing any suggestion of deliberate harm and labeling two Letby-killed infants as having died of natural causes. The doctored report was presented to the board to justify Letby's return to the ward, while police were only involved after senior doctors pressured executives.
The inquiry noted that three babies could have been saved had the hospital acted earlier. Parents received incomplete excerpts of the altered report months later, leaving them confused and distressed.
