Hospital staff demand action over asbestos findings at Aiginiteio facilities

Workers at Aiginiteio hospital protest the discovery of asbestos and accuse the administration of inaction, calling for immediate safety measures.

A union representing staff at Aiginiteio hospital has raised alarm over asbestos uncovered during recent renovations, claiming the hospital administration and the university's technical service have done nothing to safeguard patients and workers. The Demokritos Research Centre analyzed samples and reported dangerous levels of asbestos, notifying the main site and its satellite locations on Dimos 4 and Dimitresa 10. The union’s 15/10 resolution calls for immediate protective measures, thorough independent sampling of all areas, clear hazard signage, and strict enforcement of legal safety protocols.

It also seeks a meeting with management to publish all test results and ensure full compliance with health standards. The activist group Health Movement adds that renovation crews lack proper protective equipment, exposing themselves and potentially spreading fibers to high-traffic clinic areas, including a child psychiatry ward.
