On Thursday, the U.S. House of Representatives approved the Protect Economic and Academic Freedom Act, a Republican-driven bill aimed at preventing federally funded colleges from joining boycotts of Israel or barring student exchanges with the country. The legislation passed 237-169, with 33 Democrats breaking ranks and only two Republicans voting against it. It mandates that institutions receiving federal student-aid funds must annually certify that they do not restrict Israeli students or prevent U.S. students from participating in programs in Israel.
House education committee chair Tim Walberg framed the measure as a safeguard for taxpayer dollars, while Democrat Bobby Scott warned it could clash with First Amendment rights. Co-sponsor Josh Gottheimer described the bill as a narrow tool to fight antisemitism and the BDS movement. The bill now heads to the Senate amid a heated political climate ahead of the midterm elections.
