House Budget Chair to Host Texas Hearing on Bipartisan Debt Commission

House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington revealed plans for a full committee hearing in Dallas on Sept. 21 to discuss creating a bipartisan fiscal commission to address the nation’s $40 trillion debt burden. Arrington highlighted the difficulty of confronting entitlement spending as millions of baby boomers enter Social Security and Medicare, noting that even drastic cuts to discretionary spending would not resolve the fiscal imbalance. He referenced successful past commissions like the Base Realignment and Closure commission and the 1983 Social Security reform commission, while acknowledging the limited impact of the 2010 Simpson-Bowles effort. Rising long-term Treasury yields underscore market concerns, and proponents view a new commission as a way to provide political cover while signaling seriousness to investors.
