House faces week-long deadline to renew federal highway funding
The U.S. House has only a week left in its session to pass a short-term extension before the federal highway funding program expires on Sept. 30.
A Sept. 30 deadline looms for Congress to extend the federal Highway Trust Fund, and the House has just one week of session left to act. While the bipartisan BUILD America 250 Act—a five-year, $580 billion surface-transportation reauthorization that would inject the largest bridge investment in decades—cleared its committee in May, it has not been scheduled for a floor vote. Consequently, lawmakers are expected to pass a short-term extension, yet no text has been prepared.
Over a hundred organizations, such as the American Public Transportation Administration, American Trucking Associations, and the American Council of Engineering Companies, have pressed for passage. The bill also contains major railroad-safety provisions and new rules for autonomous commercial vehicles, reflecting recent safety concerns after the 2023 East Palestine derailment.
Why it matters
Without an extension, the Highway Trust Fund could run out, halting road repairs and transit projects nationwide.
