House GOP Committee Issues Subpoena to Birth-Tourism Doctor Amid National-Security Concerns

The House Oversight Committee, chaired by James Comer, has issued a subpoena to Dr. Wladimir Lorentz, the founder and chief medical officer of the South Florida firm Have My Baby in Miami, demanding his testimony on the company’s birth-tourism practices. Lorentz’s attorney argued that a criminal probe by the Southern District of Florida prevents him from speaking, but Comer warned that postponing the hearing would hinder the committee’s oversight mission.

The hearing, scheduled for Sept. 1, will focus on how the business promotes U.S. citizenship to foreign visitors, a practice the White House flagged as a security concern earlier this month. Rep. Brandon Gill, who heads a task force on institutional abuses, warned that tourists from adversarial nations like China and Russia exacerbate immigration system abuse. The panel will also hear from immigration-policy experts Dr. Steve Camarota and Dr. Julio César Novoa.
