House GOP probes leftist jury-nullification workshops in Washington, D.C.
The House Oversight Committee has requested documents from Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams about their D.C. jury-nullification trainings, launching a new investigation.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by Rep. James Comer, issued document requests to activist organizations Free DC and Harriet’s Wildest Dreams concerning their District of Columbia jury-nullification workshops. The letters seek internal emails, advertisements, presentations, attendee lists, recordings, adviser information and funding data for sessions held since Jan 1 2025, with responses due by Oct 27, though the committee may issue subpoenas later.
Committee staff argue the trainings encourage jurors to hide political leanings and undermine the constitutional guarantee of an impartial jury. The inquiry was spurred by a report and a recent mistrial in former councilman Trayon White’s bribery case, which the groups celebrated online. Trainers have asserted that their “superpower” to nullify juries threatens a U.S. Attorney appointed by President Donald Trump.
They also claimed influence over the acquittal of Sean Dunn, dubbed the “sandwich guy,” in a misdemeanor assault case. Neither organization has responded to comment requests.
Why it matters
It raises concerns about activist influence on juries and the integrity of the U.S. legal system.
