House Judiciary Panel Demands Queens DA Release Sanctuary Case Files
The House Judiciary Committee has reissued a request to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz for all records on migrant defendants who received preferential treatment under sanctuary policies.
The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan and Subcommittee Chairman Tom McClintock, has renewed a May-era demand that Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz produce every document related to migrants charged with crimes who were allegedly given preferential treatment because of sanctuary policies. In a letter obtained by the Post, the Republicans claim Katz’s office cited 10th Amendment protections to ignore a June 10 deadline and argue that providing the records would be “impossible.”
The committee references the Shut Down Sanctuary Policies Act of 2026, which amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to force local jurisdictions to cooperate with ICE. Jordan and McClintock also note that less than 4% of ICE detainers were honored by the New York City Department of Corrections between July 2022 and June 2025. Katz is among seven city officials, including NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Corrections Commissioner Stanley Richards, questioned about sanctuary practices.
No comment has been received from Katz’s office. The request is part of a larger legislative effort to curb sanctuary jurisdictions that resist federal immigration enforcement.
Why it matters
It highlights a clash between federal immigration enforcement and local sanctuary policies, affecting how migrant crime cases are handled.
