House panel demands CPS chief explain policies that limit parental knowledge of gender transitions
The House Education and Workforce Committee has asked Chicago Public Schools Superintendent Macquline King to clarify guidelines that may keep parents uninformed about students' gender identity changes.
The House Committee on Education and the Workforce, led by Rep. Tim Walberg, has formally requested Chicago Public Schools Superintendent and CEO Macquline King to respond to concerns that district policies hide gender transition information from parents. Walberg referenced the June 10 hearing where King claimed CPS does not conceal information, yet pointed to interim guidelines and a Gender Diversity Toolkit that prohibit staff from sharing a student's transgender status without the student's permission and do not require parental consent.
He warned that such vague rules could impede parents' communication rights and potentially violate the Supreme Court’s recent Mirabelli v. Bonta ruling. Walberg also noted King's evasive answers when asked about aligning district policies with that decision. The committee seeks all guidance documents, complaints, and professional-development materials related to gender and sexuality, with a response deadline of Sept. 11. No comment was received from CPS at the time of reporting.
