House prosecutors submit formal evidence package in Vice President Duterte's impeachment trial

The House prosecution panel filed its formal offer of evidence for Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment, just before the October 23 deadline.

The House prosecution panel confirmed that it submitted its formal offer of evidence on Wednesday, meeting the deadline set for October 23 in the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte. The package comprises all documentary proof and witness statements linked to Article 2, which accuses Duterte of possessing unexplained assets absent from her Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth. Defense counsel now has a ten-day window to comment before the Senate impeachment court evaluates the evidence's admissibility.

Prosecutors, represented by Robert Ace Barbers, said the evidence is robust and should lead to a conviction, citing violations of constitutional provisions and other laws. The panel had previously rested its case on October 13 after using 39 of the allotted 62 trial days and had dismissed three other articles of impeachment concerning confidential funds, bribery, and alleged threats against President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and his family.

Why it matters

The filing moves Duterte's impeachment forward, potentially reshaping the Philippines' political landscape.
