House Ways and Means Committee threatens subpoenas for Singham-linked nonprofits unless they comply

The House Ways and Means Committee warned three nonprofits tied to Neville Roy Singham that they must produce documents by Tuesday or their leaders, including Singham, could be summoned to testify before Congress.

The House Ways and Means Committee escalated its probe of three tax-exempt organizations linked to tech entrepreneur Neville Roy Singham, issuing letters that require financial documents and related records by Tuesday. The subpoena targets The People’s Forum Inc., BreakThrough News and Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, and lists 21 people—including Singham, executive directors and journalists—as potential witnesses before Congress.

Committee chair Jason Smith said the groups have received millions from Singham to promote Chinese Communist Party propaganda and must disclose how the money is used. The nonprofits contend the request infringes on First Amendment rights and have legally challenged the subpoenas. The investigation runs alongside a separate grand-jury probe in the Southern District of New York into possible wire fraud, bank fraud and money-laundering by Singham’s funding network, though no charges have been announced.

Why it matters

It shows how Congress is examining foreign influence in U.S. nonprofit activism and testing limits on First Amendment protections.
