Housewife loses RM472,000 after falling for fake police and prosecutor scam

A 46-year-old housewife in Kuala Terengganu was duped into sending RM472,000 to scammers posing as police and a public prosecutor.

Police in Kuala Terengganu said a 46-year-old housewife fell victim to a telephone fraud scheme that cost her RM472,000. On Aug 5 she answered a call from a person identifying himself as "Mohd Farhan Jamil" and claiming to work for the Communications Ministry, who accused her of disseminating unauthorized investment and job-related information. The scammer said the call would be transferred to Kajang police headquarters, where a fake "Sergeant Andi" allegedly confirmed she was involved in money-laundering and faced an arrest warrant.

The conversation was then handed to a counterfeit deputy public prosecutor, Zaleha, who instructed the woman to transfer funds, promising a refund after the investigation. Between Aug 18 and Sept 19 she completed 21 transfers to three different bank accounts, amounting to RM472,000, and declined a further RM80,000 demand. She reported the incident to the police, and the case is now being pursued under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
