Housing Authority abstains on two Taizoom lift upgrades amid safety concerns

The Housing Authority voted to abstain on lift replacement projects at Pok Hong Estate and Tsui Ping (North) Estate after missing fire-resistant door frames were found, while it had previously approved Taizoom for a lift job at Fu Heng Estate.

The Housing Authority disclosed that it refrained from voting on lift replacement proposals at two public housing estates after inspections revealed absent fire-resistant door frames. Meetings held in January 2024 at Pok Hong Estate in Sha Tin and in March of the previous year at Tsui Ping (North) Estate in Kwun Tong saw the Authority’s representatives present but abstaining. In contrast, the Authority had approved Taizoom Elevator for a lift project at Fu Heng Estate in Tai Po, basing the decision on the firm’s prior performance, tender price and EMSD ratings.

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department subsequently launched a citywide audit of Taizoom lifts, finding missing smoke-seal components in 48 units across the two estates. In response, the Authority has recommended that the incorporated owners' committee of Fu Heng Estate suspend the contract award pending further review.

Why it matters

Residents' safety could be compromised if faulty lifts are installed in public housing.
