Housing innovators battle rising energy costs and regulatory hurdles
Rising home energy bills are prompting startups and programs like the USGBC California Net Zero Accelerator to develop solutions, but scaling them faces policy, financing and market resistance.
Homeowners across the United States are feeling a sharp increase in energy costs, with the Pew Research Center noting that over 75% say bills have risen, and 42% say they have risen dramatically. The Energy Information Administration forecasts record electricity consumption for 2026 and 2027, with residential use accounting for more than a quarter of the total. In response, the USGBC California chapter’s Net Zero Accelerator program has launched its eighth cohort, supporting startups that address water reuse, heat-pump technology, plug-in battery storage and electrification planning software.
Companies like Waterleaf, Gradient Comfort, Harvest Thermal, Moduly, YellowTin and QuitCarbon are testing their products in pilot projects, yet they confront systemic barriers such as risk-averse builders, limited financing after the EPA ended billions in greenhouse-gas grants, and the need for policy incentives. Some firms are pursuing niche markets or direct homeowner sales to build traction, while others await promised federal grants that remain undelivered. Large corporations such as Schneider Electric also see opportunities, but the overall landscape remains challenging for widespread adoption of innovative, cost-saving housing technologies.
