Housing protestors march to Porto City Hall after police raid
Demonstrators opposing the housing crisis moved from Praça D. João I to the steps of Porto City Hall following a police operation that injured dozens.
Protesters demanding action on the housing crisis set up a tent camp at Praça D. João I and, after a police raid that caused injuries, marched through adjacent streets to the front of Porto City Hall, climbing the ramp to occupy the steps near a tourist sign. Police were present but refrained from further action while the demonstrators continued their presence. The housing movement says 39 people were hurt, two seriously, and that a person with a disability and multiple others required hospital care.
The municipal police confirmed one officer was injured and acknowledged protester injuries, attributing the raid to resistance. The group outlined six core demands, including rent control, an end to evictions, and more public housing. City Hall officials expressed regret over the incident and said the police were forced to act.
