Houston mayor argues his city beats Austin for NHL expansion slot

The National Hockey League is seeking to introduce two additional teams, one of which is expected to be based in Texas. Houston’s mayor, John Whitmire, contended that the city’s status as the nation’s biggest media market lacking an NHL franchise makes it a more attractive choice than Austin. He cited conversations with multiple interested groups and referenced Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly’s acknowledgment of the market factor.

Whitmire also recalled Houston’s past hockey presence with the World Hockey Association’s Aeros and current minor-league teams. Austin’s mayor, Kirk Watson, has not provided a statement on the matter. Other locations, including Atlanta, remain in contention for the league’s second new club.
