How Automation Is Boosting Jobs and Wages in Modern Manufacturing

MiddleGround Capital uses robotics to cut hazardous tasks, improve output and create higher-pay roles for factory workers.

MiddleGround Capital, led by John Stewart, has rolled out automated equipment on factory floors to replace dangerous, repetitive labor with safer, higher-skill work. A recent robotic forging-press installation eliminated a production bottleneck, reduced downtime by roughly 15%, lessened workers’ ergonomic burdens and generated an estimated $9.07 million in enterprise value. Stewart emphasizes that efficiency gains are intended to fund wage increases and provide training for staff to operate the new systems.

The shift mirrors a wider pattern in manufacturing, where roles like automation technicians, robot programmers and system designers are on the rise, and where managers are gaining deeper automation expertise. The World Economic Forum estimated that automation could create 58 million jobs globally as of 2021. MiddleGround’s own automation division, now 11 members strong, focuses on safety, worker upskilling and tailoring solutions to the nuances of each plant.

Why it matters

Automation can transform dangerous factory jobs into safer, higher-pay positions while generating new career paths.
