How Distant Wildfire Smoke Changes Color, Smell and Health Risks Across the Continent

Researchers explain how wildfire smoke transforms as it travels thousands of miles, altering its appearance, odor and health impacts.

Wildfires emit a complex mix of PM2.5, nitrogen oxides and VOCs, many of which are toxic or carcinogenic. High-intensity flames produce different chemicals than cooler smoldering fires, and the blend changes throughout the day. Strong heat lifts smoke into the free troposphere, where high-altitude winds transport it across the continent.

Sunlight then breaks down dark particles and reactive compounds, turning black plumes into light-scattering white haze and erasing the typical campfire smell. As the plume descends over cities, it encounters vehicle exhaust and other urban emissions, reigniting chemical reactions that boost ozone levels. The resulting distant smoke remains a health hazard, underscoring the growing air-quality challenge for North America.
