How Home Upgrades Can Trim Energy Bills as Prices Rise
With the energy price cap set to increase, Phil Spencer outlines which home improvements can deliver the biggest savings.
Energy bills are poised to climb after a 4% hike to the price cap on Thursday, raising average annual costs by roughly £60, with a steeper rise forecast for January. Property expert Phil Spencer advises homeowners to prioritize insulation of walls, roofs and floors, which the Energy Saving Trust says could slash heating expenses by 25%-45%. Sealing drafts around windows and doors offers modest savings of £60-£150 per year, while replacing single-glazed windows with double-glazed units may save about £85 annually.
He also notes that solar panels and heat pumps can become self-financing over a decade, and highlights inexpensive measures like LED lighting, smart thermostats and timed plugs. Finally, Spencer suggests lifestyle adjustments such as full dishwasher loads, off-peak appliance use, and lowering thermostats by one degree to further reduce bills.
