Trent Knox quit drugs and built a sober life by joining early-morning runs that evolved into a marathon-training community, a shift supported by neuroscience research on exercise’s impact on the brain.

Trent Knox, once entrenched in daily drug use, turned his life around after a pivotal conversation that led him to Alcoholics Anonymous and a 4.40 am running group in Sydney’s Bronte area. The habit grew into the 440 Run Club, where regular early-morning runs became his anchor and eventually propelled him to finish a marathon in September 2024. Researchers including Laura Pigott and Shalini Arunogiri note that running releases endocannabinoids, opioids, dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine, creating a “neurochemical orchestra” that can mimic the reward pathways activated by addictive substances.

Peter van Wijngaarden adds that sustained exercise boosts brain-derived neurotrophic factor and fosters neuroplastic changes, enhancing stress resilience and self-efficacy. Community-focused groups such as Run Into Recovery further help former addicts build sober social networks. Although marathon participation has exploded—about 4,000 events globally and tens of thousands in Sydney—studies warn of temporary brain myelin loss after extreme endurance effort and the risk of over-reliance on running for self-worth.
