How St. Elsewhere Shaped Modern Medical Dramas and Launched Star Careers

St. Elsewhere, a gritty Boston hospital series, redefined TV storytelling and helped launch several notable actors.

Created by Joshua Brand and John Falsey, St. Elsewhere followed the lives of doctors and patients at a struggling Boston hospital, delivering a new, overlapping narrative style that contrasted with earlier, tidy medical series. Critics initially doubted its mass appeal, yet the show amassed 13 Emmy wins, including six in a single season, and earned acting accolades for three regulars. It proved a launchpad for future stars, notably Denzel Washington, Mark Harmon, David Morse and comedian Howie Mandel in a dramatic role.

The series concluded with an audacious finale that suggested the entire story might have existed within the imagination of an autistic child, Tommy Westphall. This daring ending cemented its legacy as a trailblazer in television history.

Why it matters

The series set a template for realistic, character-driven medical dramas and propelled several actors to fame.
