How to Keep Your Daily Coffee Healthy, According to a Gastroenterologist
Gastroenterologist Natalja Gyianova explains how to preserve coffee’s benefits by avoiding added sugar, sugary syrups, and high-fat dairy.
According to gastroenterologist Natalja Gyianova, coffee itself offers many health benefits, but these are often undermined by common additives such as refined sugar, flavored syrups, and full-fat dairy. These extras dramatically increase the drink’s calorie content, potentially leading to weight gain and heightened risk of diabetes and cardiovascular problems. Gyianova advises replacing sugar with natural sweeteners like stevia or, better yet, gradually weaning off all additives to enjoy black coffee.
She also recommends substituting cow’s milk with plant-based options such as almond, soy, or chickpea drinks to lower saturated fat intake and prevent bloating in lactose-intolerant individuals. Additionally, she cautions against pairing coffee with pastries or sweets, suggesting healthier snacks like dried fruit or unsweetened fruit juice. Finally, she notes that limiting consumption to one or two cups daily can help avoid sleep disturbances and protect the stomach lining.
