How U.S. Expats in Italy Can Use International Credit Unions for Banking

U.S. citizens living in Italy face hurdles with traditional banks, but several credit unions—such as SDFCU, Service Credit Union, Alliant, UNFCU and Navy Federal—offer accounts and services tailored to overseas Americans.

Living in Italy as a U.S. citizen complicates access to traditional banking due to FATCA compliance and recent EU law changes, pushing many to use fintech services that only cover basic transactions. Credit unions created for military, diplomatic or global American communities now extend membership to a broader audience, providing full-service banking, investment products and loan options. The State Department Credit Union (SDFCU) allows enrollment via the American Consumer Council for a $15 fee and sends verification codes via WhatsApp.

Service Credit Union, originally for Air Force personnel, offers checking accounts with tiered APY and a high-yield savings option, and can be joined for free with a promo code. Alliant Federal Credit Union operates digitally, offering checking accounts that earn up to 2% APY and savings rates starting at 3.01%. United Nations Federal Credit Union, with a branch in Rome, provides mortgage financing abroad and savings accounts with rates up to 1.35% for large balances.

Navy Federal Credit Union, the world’s largest, serves DoD employees and military families, offering modest interest on savings and checking accounts and business banking services. These credit unions present viable alternatives for Americans needing comprehensive financial services while residing in Italy.
