Huanggang Port sees traveler numbers nearly double previous crossing

Secretary for Security Chris Tang reported that daily usage of the new Huanggang Port is almost twice that of the old facility, with peaks expected to exceed 100,000 during the long weekend.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang announced that the newly opened Huanggang Port is attracting roughly double the travelers of the previous crossing, with daily figures around 80,000 from Monday to Thursday and more than 90,000 on Friday. The former crossing typically saw 30,000 to 40,000 users, making one outlet flow about 1.5 to 2 times higher. Despite the increase, the co-location model keeps average clearance times under five minutes.

Over 300,000 people have signed up for the "collaborative inspection" automated service via the Immigration Department’s app since its launch on October 6. Meanwhile, usage at Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line checkpoints has dipped by a few percent as travelers opt for Huanggang. Tang expects daily crossings to top 100,000 during the three-day Chung Yeung Festival weekend and has deployed additional staff to prevent congestion at the transport interchange.

Why it matters

The surge shows the new border facility’s capacity to handle higher traffic efficiently, easing congestion for travelers.
