Hubble Captures Expansive Superbubble and Star-Forming Shell in LMC Nebula N44
A new Hubble image shows the superbubble and surrounding gas shell of the N44 nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, highlighting active star formation.
Using Hubble, astronomers imaged the N44 nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud, showcasing a huge central void—known as a superbubble—spanning roughly 210 by 140 light-years. Powerful winds and past supernova explosions from the cluster’s bright stars expelled most of the original gas, creating a surrounding shell of dense, dusty material. This compressed shell now hosts vigorous star formation, with many newborn stars still contracting toward nuclear ignition.
The observing program cataloged an extensive stellar census, identifying a substantial number of pre-main-sequence stars that have yet to begin hydrogen fusion. Additional features, such as the smaller bubble N44F sculpted by a single massive star, are also visible, offering insight into star-formation processes in low-metallicity environments like the LMC.
