HUD chief says regulations add $100,000 to median U.S. home price

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner told a radio show that about one-quarter of a typical $400,000 home’s cost comes from government regulations.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner appeared on The Clay & Buck Show to discuss the impact of federal regulations on housing costs. He noted that the median American home now exceeds $400,000, with $100,000 of that price tied to regulatory compliance. Turner said eliminating such rules would reduce building expenses, allowing lower prices for 20- to 40-year-old buyers and increasing supply.

He described the administration’s strategy as a combination of deregulation and incentives to revive home construction. The secretary also criticized longstanding environmental mandates, claiming they delay projects. Turner framed these actions as part of a broader effort with the current administration to make homeownership more attainable.

Why it matters

Regulatory costs significantly inflate home prices, affecting affordability for many Americans.
