Human Ignition Drives Majority of U.S. Wildfires, Arson Suspect Arrested in Washington

Federal statistics indicate that more than 75 % of U.S. wildfires originate from human sources, ranging from careless campfires to faulty power infrastructure and intentional arson. Meanwhile, investigators in Reno, Nevada, maintain that the Hawk Fire, threatening the city, appears to be human-caused though the exact trigger remains unknown. Climate scientist Andrés Holz notes that hotter, drier conditions from climate change lengthen fire seasons, while improved firefighting and public awareness keep most human-started fires contained.
