Human-rights group challenges Infantino’s eligibility for another FIFA term
FairSquare has asked FIFA to bar Gianni Infantino from running again, saying his first stint should count toward the three-term limit.
FairSquare submitted a complaint to FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee, insisting that Gianni Infantino is ineligible for another presidential term because the organization’s rules limit officeholders to three terms. The group contends that the 2022 decision, which excluded Infantino’s first spell after the 2016 Extraordinary Congress, contradicts the statutes and was not publicly justified. FairSquare’s director, Nicholas McGeehan, highlighted the lack of reasoning and the timing of the announcement just before the Qatar 2022 final.
The challenge arrives ahead of the 2027-31 FIFA Congress scheduled for March 18 in Morocco, where Infantino is expected to run again. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, CONCACAF and the Scottish Football Association have called for a review of his conduct, while African and South American confederations continue to support him. Former governance reviewer Miguel Maduro backed the complaint, emphasizing that term limits were a core reform to curb presidential power.
Why it matters
The case could reshape FIFA’s leadership rules and affect future governance of global football.
