Human Rights Group Reports Widespread Torture and Medical Neglect in Chinese Prisons
A new CHRD report says many prisoners in China, especially political detainees, say they were beaten, denied medical care and subjected to other abusive practices.
The Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) released a study covering 209 prisoners detained between 2016 and 2025, documenting allegations of beatings, forced confessions, deprivation of food, water, sleep, exposure to extreme temperatures and electric shocks. According to the findings, one fifth of those surveyed reported being beaten and 15% said torture was employed to extract admissions, while 35% said they were denied proper medical care, resulting in 16 deaths behind bars.
The report highlights the plight of Yin Dengzhen, convicted of “provoking trouble” after signing a petition, whose daughter Xia Beibei says her mother, suffering from lymphoma, was transferred to a prison despite being declared “healthy” and was denied medical release. Chinese authorities have not opened investigations, and the government continues to reject UN and NGO accusations of torture despite being a signatory to the UN Convention Against Torture. The CHRD concludes that systemic refusal to hold perpetrators accountable allows abuse to persist across all provinces except Macau.
