Hummingbird feathers reveal eight decades of heavy-metal pollution in southeast Mexico

Researchers analyzed museum hummingbird feathers to trace mercury, arsenic and lead levels across 80 years in southeastern Mexico.

A team led by Dr. Ruth Partida examined hummingbird feathers stored in collections at the Autonomous University of Campeche, UNAM, ECOSUR and the Chiapas Ministry of Environment to reconstruct regional pollution trends. By mapping mercury, arsenic and lead in species such as the cinnamon hummingbird, buff-bellied hummingbird and green-throated mountain-gem, they found a steady drop in lead coinciding with the phase-out of leaded gasoline and peaks that align with the 1982 Chichonal volcano eruption.

The analysis relied on voltammetry, which requires only a few milligrams of material, making it suitable for tiny birds. Findings illustrate how pollutants travel beyond protected areas and accumulate in ecosystems via rain and food webs. Although the study did not assess health impacts directly, existing bird research suggests chronic heavy-metal exposure can impair immunity, reproduction and flight. The work highlights the value of scientific collections for monitoring hidden environmental threats.
