Hundreds of school visits and dozens of fines issued under Austria's new headscarf ban
Since the ban on headscarves for girls under 14 took effect, 252 meetings with the education directorate and 87 formal charges have been recorded.
Under the newly enforced regulation, girls younger than 14 may not wear headscarves at school; first-time violations result in a teacher reminder, while further infractions lead to parental discussions and, eventually, a formal appointment with the education directorate. To date, the directorate has held 252 such appointments and 87 administrative charges have been filed. The education ministry in Vienna reports most of these cases, with fines ranging from 150 to 800 euros.
Youth organisations such as the Socialist Youth, AKS, the Red Falcons, communist youth groups and the "Schule brennt" initiative organised demonstrations in Vienna and called for protests across other states. Protesters criticised the ban as discriminatory and called for increased education funding and broader social change.
Why it matters
The enforcement figures show how a controversial school policy is impacting students and families across Austria.
