Hundreds protest pro-Palestinian rally in Berlin, police make dozens of arrests

Around 700 people gathered in Kreuzberg on the third anniversary of the Hamas attack to demonstrate for Palestine, and police halted the march, detaining over 30 participants.

On the third anniversary of the Hamas assault, roughly 700 demonstrators gathered at Oranienplatz in Berlin's Kreuzberg area, many carrying Palestinian flags and protest signs. The crowd, composed largely of young men and women, chanted slogans such as "Viva Palestina" and other calls referencing an intifada and resistance. Police intervened after the march repeatedly breached its conditions and posed a significant public safety risk, leading to the event's termination.

Over 30 participants were detained for displaying symbols associated with the banned terrorist organization Hamas. Among the attendees was Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The protest also featured a counter-group holding Israeli flags and a sign urging shame, highlighting the polarized atmosphere.

Why it matters

The protest and police response illustrate ongoing tensions over the Gaza conflict and the limits on extremist symbols in public demonstrations.
