Hungarian chief prosecutor launches new disciplinary case and suspends former chief prosecutor Fürcht
Chief prosecutor Lajtár István opened a fresh disciplinary proceeding against former chief prosecutor Dr. Fürcht Pál Zsolt and placed him on suspension.
Hungary's chief prosecutor Lajtár István announced a new disciplinary investigation targeting former chief prosecutor Dr. Fürcht Pál Zsolt and simultaneously suspended him from his position. The move arises from Fürcht's public letter that revealed investigative data about the high-profile "gold convoy" case, which the chief prosecutor described as a breach of confidentiality and an attempt to portray the office as politically influenced.
Lajtár argued that such ambiguous statements undermine the constitutional guarantee of prosecutorial independence and violate ethical norms. Fürcht's conduct is also said to have misled the public by implying that the prosecutor's office obstructed a full factual inquiry. No tribunal has yet been convened, but the Országgyűlés may become the venue for his testimony on other cases, including the Magyar Péter phone affair. Meanwhile, three other prosecutors have been placed in key roles while the top candidate awaits appointment.
