Hungarian construction output falls for third month as new contracts slump
According to the Központi Statisztikai Hivatal, construction volume in July continued a downward trend, registering a notable decline compared with the same month last year. Building construction and other structures both posted lower output, while road, railway and utility projects were the main drivers of the slump in other structures. New contracts signed in July were considerably fewer than a year ago, especially for building projects. The total stock of existing contracts edged slightly higher, offset by a modest rise in contracts for other structures.
Data from the Központi Statisztikai Hivatal show that July was the third consecutive month in which Hungary's construction sector recorded an annual decrease in production. Both the overall volume and the work-day-adjusted figures fell relative to July 2025, with building construction and other structures each lagging behind the previous year. The decline was most pronounced in road and railway works and utility construction, which saw steep drops, while special-trade construction barely grew.
New contracts signed during the month dropped sharply, particularly for building projects, while contracts for other structures also fell. Despite the downturn, the total volume of existing contracts at month-end was slightly higher than a year earlier, with a small increase in contracts for other structures offsetting a modest decline in building contracts.
