Hungarian court issues final rulings in high-profile Antifa case
On September 30, the Fővárosi Ítélőtábla announced its conclusive decisions in the Antifa case. Two of the accused received modest cuts to their prison terms, whereas the remaining verdicts stayed unchanged. The trial stemmed from five violent assaults in February 2023 that left nine victims, six seriously injured. Several defendants challenged procedural aspects, but the court rejected most of those appeals.
The second-instance hearing of the so-called Antifa case concluded on September 30 with the Budapest City Court issuing its binding rulings. The court trimmed the custodial sentences of German defendant Maja Trux Ravi from eight to seven years and of Italian defendant Gabriele M. from seven to six years, while leaving the penalties for other accused individuals intact. The case originated from a series of five attacks in February 2023 targeting pedestrians perceived as far-right, resulting in nine injuries, six of them severe.
Earlier, the first-instance court had imposed harsh punishments on the radical left-wing group. Defendants raised objections concerning alleged procedural errors and misidentification, but the judges affirmed the original findings and classified the crimes as joint participation rather than organized crime. The proceedings were marked by a sizable presence of Antifa sympathisers outside the courtroom.
