Hungarian court orders reopening of Szeged's Wesley school after illegal government block
A court found the Csongrád-Csanád County Government Office's shutdown of the Wesley János school in Szeged unlawful, permitting the institution to reopen after two years.
In August 2024 the Csongrád-Csanád County Government Office shut down the Wesley János Kindergarten, Primary School and Gymnasium in Szeged, as part of a broader closure of MET schools in Budapest and Szeged. The Esélyteremtő Wesley Közhasznú Alapítvány, seeking to keep the school operating, filed a lawsuit with legal assistance from the Társaság a Szabadságjogokért. The Szegedi Törvényszék determined the government office's decision was unfounded, criticizing the ministry's reliance on generic seat-availability statistics and its failure to consider children with special educational needs.
The court mandated a fresh administrative review and cleared the way for the school to reopen for the new academic year. The Magyar Helsinki Bizottság described the closure as the most dramatic episode in MET's history, and the school now prepares to resume integrated, safe education for its students.
Why it matters
The ruling restores access to education for students affected by an unlawful school shutdown.
