Hungarian culture minister announces dissolution of MNMKK and restoration of museum autonomy
Minister Tarr Zoltán said the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Közgyűjteményi Központ will be dissolved and its member institutions will regain legal and professional independence.
At a meeting of the Országos Közgyűjtemények Szövetsége, culture minister Tarr Zoltán revealed that the Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum Közgyűjteményi Központ will be shut down. He emphasized that museums should decide where their collections, knowledge, and responsibility reside - within the institutions themselves. Consequently, the affected museums will recover their legal and professional independence, and decision-making powers will be returned to them.
The ministry aims to establish a more predictable financing model, conduct open and non-political leadership selections, enhance international collaboration, and regularize museum employees' wages. The reform plan will be shaped with the participation of museum sector experts.
Why it matters
The change reshapes governance and funding of Hungary's major museums, affecting cultural preservation and staff conditions.
