Hungarian food safety agency shuts down Budapest gyros plant over severe hygiene breaches
The National Food Chain Safety Office suspended a Budapest factory that makes gyros and meat patties after finding serious hygiene and paperwork violations.
During a night-shift inspection, the Nemzeti Élelmiszerlánc-biztonsági Hivatal (Nébih) found a Budapest facility producing gyros and meat patties riddled with hygiene and documentation failures. Inspectors reported filthy, cramped changing rooms, deteriorated walls, floors and ceilings, pest nests, clogged drainage, and non-functional hand-washing stations. The plant also lacked proper waste storage, processed animal species without permits, and none of its staff held valid health books.
Nébih immediately ordered a suspension of the plant’s activities and barred workers from employment, while seizing roughly four tonnes of expired, untraceable food and feed and mandating a closure of the premises. The factory may resume only after fully correcting the violations and passing a follow-up inspection, with a fine currently being processed.
Why it matters
