Hungarian government outlines plan to expand stalled home battery-solar subsidy program

The home energy storage initiative, introduced by the former Fidesz government, let participants pair existing or new solar installations with a minimum 10 kWh battery and receive up to 2.5 million forint in grant money. Applications closed on 15 March, drawing 132 000 requests, but only about 42.2 thousand could be funded under the original 105.5 billion forint ceiling. After a half-year stall, Minister Kapitány announced that the number of winners will be increased, though the exact figure was not disclosed.

Options under discussion include raising the overall programme budget by roughly 37.5 billion forint or lowering the per-household grant ceiling to spread funds more widely. Around 25 thousand households have already received positive notices, and the National Energy Agency must still resolve several eligibility and timing issues before the scheme can resume.
