Hungarian government raises penalties for corporate environmental violations

The government announced higher fines for companies that pollute, setting new minimums and raising the upper limits for both corporate and individual penalties.

Hungary's cabinet has issued revised rules that boost the financial penalties imposed on firms responsible for environmental damage. Companies will now face fines that correspond to a higher proportion of their previous year's net sales, with a mandatory minimum amount established. The maximum corporate fine has been lifted, and the cap on fines for natural persons involved in waste management has also been raised.

The amendments become effective sixteen days after their announcement, specifically on October 25. The changes were outlined in the recent edition of Magyar Közlöny and reflect commitments previously voiced by the prime minister and Magyar Péter earlier this year.

Why it matters

Stronger fines aim to deter pollution and encourage better environmental practices by businesses.
