Hungarian government resumes talks with Norway over suspended development fund
Budapest has restarted negotiations with Norway to reactivate a development fund that was halted in 2021, aiming to channel new resources into green and social projects.
Hungary’s government has reopened bilateral talks with Norway to restart the Norwegian Fund that was suspended in 2021. The foreign minister explained that the new talks aim to craft a deal in which the majority of the resources support green development, local community assistance, cultural activities, social cohesion, health care and institutional improvements. Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein operate a financial mechanism within the European Economic Area to aid newer EU members, despite not being EU members themselves.
In one outlet 2021-2028 period, a substantial sum is earmarked for Hungary, with Norway providing the bulk of the financing. The previous allocation cycle failed to deliver any funds after a disagreement over whether a state body or the EEA partners should decide the beneficiaries. The Ökotárs Foundation has already announced a separate Norwegian civil fund returning to support Hungarian civil society until 2031.
