Hungarian Justice Ministry settles defamation case with investigative outlet Átlátszó

The Justice Ministry reached a settlement with Átlátszó after the former Sovereignty Protection Office made false claims about the outlet.

In 2025 Átlászó filed a lawsuit against the Sovereignty Protection Office, accusing it of accusing the investigative portal of espionage, news fabrication, and foreign payment schemes. Although a first-instance court validated Átlászó’s claims and ordered a public apology, a higher court nullified that ruling and sent the case back for reconsideration. The Justice Ministry, which now represents the dissolved office, admitted that the agency’s statements were unfounded and that they harmed Átlászó’s reputation.

Consequently, the ministry agreed to a settlement that includes compensation for the outlet’s damages and the costs incurred during the legal proceedings. Both parties described the agreement as final and binding.
