Hungarian minister Magyar Péter says EU budget plan is unacceptable in current form
Magyar Péter told the EU summit that the draft 2028 multi-annual budget cannot be approved as presented.
At the opening of the EU summit, Hungarian minister Magyar Péter met with the Cohesion Friends bloc and other Visegrád leaders to discuss the Commission's draft for the 2028 multi-annual financial framework. He declared one outlet version unacceptable, arguing that it does not preserve enough cohesion and agricultural support and would force Hungary to increase its net contributions. Leaders such as Czech premier Andrej Babiš and Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson echoed the criticism, whereas Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda praised the overall balance but noted dissatisfaction with other cuts.
The summit also touched on migration, energy price mitigation, and the EU's trade deficit with China. Negotiations will now move from the rotating presidency to the European Council chaired by António Costa, with a target to reach agreement by year-end.
