Hungarian minister Ruff Bálint introduces law banning officials from holding sports leadership roles
Minister Ruff Bálint submitted a draft law that would prevent holders of certain public, political or governmental positions from also serving as leaders in sports organisations.
Ruff Bálint, the minister heading the Prime Minister's Office, has formally presented a draft amendment that would bar individuals occupying specific public, political, governmental or state-owned economic posts from simultaneously holding leadership positions in sports bodies. The legislation’s stated purpose is to ensure that sport operates without political or governmental interference and to bolster internal self-organisation and autonomy.
State secretary Kálnoki-Kiss Attila communicated the submission via his Facebook page, emphasizing that the measure advances the separation of sport from everyday politics and enhances transparency. He indicated that a broad parliamentary debate is slated for early November, with a possible concluding vote by the end of that month if the process remains unchanged. The move follows a September announcement by Magyar Péter, who warned that ruling party politicians have increasingly taken control of sports clubs and federations, prompting the need for stricter conflict-of-interest safeguards.
Why it matters
It seeks to prevent political interference in sports, promoting fair governance and transparency.
