Hungarian PM Peter Magyar reiterates opposition to same-sex marriage and adoption

Prime Minister Peter Magyar said he still does not support legalising same-sex marriage, calling the idea unimaginable in his first interview since leaving the former Orbán office.

Prime Minister Peter Magyar said that he remains firmly opposed to legalising marriage between same-sex couples, describing such a shift as unimaginable and warning against turning Hungary into a Fidesz-style state. The interview, conducted after his Thursday press briefing, was his first and likely last at the former Viktor Orbán office in Karmelita. Magyar outlined the government's priority of a full constitutional rewrite, expecting the process to last at least a year and to be.

He also echoed Orbán’s stance of not supplying weapons to Ukraine nor permitting arms shipments through Hungarian territory, though he hinted at gradual steps to improve bilateral ties, potentially at the upcoming EU summit where he may meet President Volodimir Zelenskyi. When asked about same-sex adoption, he said children would have a better upbringing with same-sex parents than in institutions, yet he has no intention to amend the law or promote marriage equality, emphasizing caution on sensitive issues such as LGBT rights and euthanasia.

Why it matters

The stance signals Hungary's continued resistance to expanding LGBT rights amid broader EU debates.
