Hungarian police detain 16-year-old from Győr after FBI alert over AI-facilitated terror threats

In mid-September, Hungary’s National Investigation Office received a tip from the FBI after an American firm flagged extremist statements made through its AI-driven chat bot. The tip led police to a 16-year-old resident of Győr, whose online messages included detailed discussions of weapons and plans for a terrorist act. A raid on his home resulted in the confiscation of his mobile device and computer, which are now being examined by forensic experts.

He was subsequently interrogated on suspicion of threatening to commit terrorism, an offense punishable by two to eight years in prison under Hungarian law. Officials emphasized that online expressions, even via AI applications, carry legal responsibility. The case underscores the growing focus on digital platforms in counter-terrorism efforts.
