Hungarian premier ends funding for UDMR-run Eurotrans, halting its citizenship assistance

Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that government funding for the Eurotrans Foundation, created by the UDMR, will cease, ending its role in simplified Hungarian naturalisation for ethnic Hungarians in Romania.

The Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Péter Magyar, has decided to withdraw financial support for the Eurotrans Foundation, an organization established by the UDMR to assist ethnic Hungarians in Romania with simplified naturalisation. Eurotrans, which operated 25 offices and provided free document preparation, will maintain services only until one outlet funding expires at year-end. Going forward, the responsibility for citizenship applications will shift to Hungarian diplomatic representations in Cluj-Napoca, Miercurea Ciuc and Bucharest.

President Zoltán Levente Nagy said the foundation has applied for next-year funding but has not yet received a response. The funding suspension follows concerns about the foundation’s involvement in overseas voting logistics during the recent Hungarian parliamentary elections.

Why it matters

The change shifts Hungarian citizenship processing for Romanian Hungarians from a local NGO to diplomatic channels, affecting accessibility and political oversight.
