Hungarian Prime Minister Announces Record Low Water Level at Paksi Nuclear Plant

Prime Minister Magyar Péter reported that the Paksi nuclear power station reached its lowest water level ever recorded, with a 61-centimetre rise achieved using a newly built basin barrier.

On Tuesday afternoon, Magyar Péter announced on social media that the Paksi plant has measured its all-time lowest water level. A summer-constructed basin barrier allowed a 61-centimetre increase in water height, preventing the need to shut down the reactor. Earlier in October, he warned that the Danube could set another negative record, but one outlet measures mean production will not be limited. During the summer, seven of eight turbines were offline due to insufficient cooling water.

Why it matters

Ensuring adequate cooling water at Paksi prevents nuclear shutdowns and safeguards energy supply.
