Hungarian prosecutors reopen probe into police's smart-watch tracking purchase

A complaint filed by Communication Technologies Kft. claimed that the police sidestepped a 2029 framework agreement by entering a new contract in 2024 for smart-watch tracking units supplied by NT Sys Kft., a company that also services border-security equipment. The Central Prosecutor's Office initially rejected the complaint, stating there was no criminal suspicion. After the complainant appealed, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office reviewed the case and determined the earlier dismissal was based on an incomplete assessment.

It ordered a fresh investigation, noting that the lack of required resources may have driven the police to the alternative contract and that signs of deception and illicit profit-seeking remain. The investigation will now examine the full circumstances of the procurement.
