According to a 2026 Ipsos KIDCOMM poll, Hungarian youngsters typically obtain their first mobile phone at roughly nine years of age, and parents most often decide which handset to buy. The device serves both as a communication tool and a step toward digital independence, allowing children to travel between school, extracurricular activities and friends while staying in touch with family. Survey respondents reported that children primarily use phones for gaming (62%), taking photos and videos (50%), sending messages (48%) and watching videos (46%).
Parents consider the phone important for being reachable and for emergency situations, but they also recognize risks such as unwanted contacts and excessive screen time. Experts recommend establishing rules on usage time, data sharing, handling unknown callers, appropriate contexts for phone use, and responses to disturbing online content before the device is handed over.
